More than 400 primary school children from 15 schools took part in an athletics competition at Braywick Leisure Centre on Friday.

They were competing for a place to represent their School Sport Partnership at the Berkshire School Games in March at St Barts School in Newbury.

The Sportshall Athletics event has been designed as a modified version of athletics for the winter season, consisting of running races and adapted field events.

The schools taking part included: Braywick Court, St Edmund Campion, Furze Platt Junior, Courthouse Junior, Holyport, Oldfield, St Lukes, St Marys, Cookham Dean, All Saints Junior, Holy Trinity Cookham, Wessex, Woodlands Park and Riverside,

Also assisting was a team of young leaders from Newlands Girls' School, who took on roles as officials and team leaders.

The competition was held as part of the national School Games initiative and was delivered by Ascot & Maidenhead School Sport Partnership.

Emma Fitzgerald, sport partnership development manager, said “It’s great to see so many children and schools taking part and enjoying completing their daily 60 active minutes.

“I am pleased that the partnership is able to provide local opportunities for these children to get involved.

“I am really looking forward to seeing the winning school teams in each age group take on the best in the County at Berkshire School Games.”

Leisure Focus sports inclusion and participation manager, Jatinder Singh Rakhra, said: “It is great
to be able to support and encourage the primary schools of Maidenhead to participate in sport and physical activity. It is an
opportunity for children to build healthy habits and encourage them to do 60 active minutes a day that will
benefit them in their lives.”
