It has been a week to remember for Maidenhead United midfielder Reece Smith, who marked his call up to the England C squad in the week with a stunning goal in the Magpies’ 4-2 success over Dorking Wanderers on Saturday.
Smith’s goal was good enough to win any game of football, with the midfielder gliding from inside his own half before planting a low shot past Harrison Male from just outside the area.
But in this feast of spectacular strikes, his goal has to battle for top billing alongside those scored by Sam Beckwith, Jayden Mitchell-Lawson – who also scored a magnificent solo goal having run from inside his own half – and Tristan Abrahams.
Smith’s performance on Saturday saw him included in the Vanarama National League team of the week, however, it was the tireless display of Abrahams who pulled Dorking out of position and allowed the likes of Smith, Ashley Nathaniel-George, and Mitchell-Lawson to make the most of their extra space.
The result, and this free-scoring performance, should give Magpies fans confidence their side will once again beat the drop, however, they remain only four points above the bottom four with eight games to go.
Reflecting on the match and his call up to the Non-league Lions, Smith said: “I've had a great week to be fair. I wasn't expecting the England C (call up), but this was a great win today. It was a six-pointer, and it was a massive win that we really needed.
“We'll keep going, we'll keep pushing but we can't relax yet, we've just got to keep digging. We had lots of chances and I feel I should have scored another one at least.
“We should have put the game to bed early doors, and we made it more difficult for ourselves than it needed to be, but we did it, that's the main thing.”
“It was an amazing goal from Jayden, an amazing goal from Tristan, real quality. All our front players were on form today.
“Massey and Lokko were also winning everything in defence. It was just a really good performance. Everyone was up for it, and we need those performances.
“We know we've got the quality to score against anyone, whether they are at the bottom or at the top. It doesn't matter who it is, we will get the goals, we just have to keep believing.”
