Burnham 2, Glebe FC 2
(Burnham win 13-12 on penalties)
Burnham will travel to either Farnham Town or Snodland Town in the third round of the FA Vase after overcoming Glebe FC 13-12 on penalties in a dramatic second round tie at the 1878 Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Ben Murray's Blues held their nerve as the game went to spot-kicks following the conclusion of an entertaining 2-2 draw which saw the hosts take a 2-1 lead before being pegged back in the 75th minute.
On Saturday, it was visitors Glebe who flew out of the traps, taking the lead with a fine move which carved through the Blues' defence. However, the Blues were very much in the game and drew level in the 35th minute when a great turn and ball over the top of Glebe's defence by George Butler gave Anas Igozoulin the chance to race clear on goal and slot home to make it 1-1.
Burnham then took the lead on the stroke of half-time with a fine individual goal from Firas Chniba. Chniba won possession back for the Blues on the half-way line before weaving past several challenges and coolly firing home.
Glebe were far from out of contention however, and a breathless cup tie saw both sides carve out chances and force their opposing keepers into action. Burnham came within a whisker of stretching their lead in the early stages of the second half, when the post came to Glebe's rescue. And the visitors took full advantage of that piece of fortune when they drew level with another fantastic strike.
Neither side was able to make a further breakthrough before the final whistle and the tie had to be settled by a penalty shootout.
A remarkable shootout ensued, with all 11 players from each side taking a kick, however, Burnham keeper Carl Dennison proved the hero with a decisive some decisive saves to seal his side's place in the third round after a 13-12 win.
The third-round tie will take place over the weekend of Saturday, December 2. Before then, the Blues will look to resurrect their form in the Combined Counties Premier Division North.
Since losing to the last kick of the game in a controversial 3-2 defeat to Flackwell Heath at Wilks Park on October 14, the Blues have played just once in the league, drawing 4-4 with leaders Rayners Lane earlier this month.
Before next month's FA Vase tie, they'll in theory play four times in the league, twice away at Reading City and Wokingham & Emmbrook, and twice at home against Harefield United and Ardley United as the 12th placed side looks to make up fixtures on rivals and close the gap to the top five play-off spots.
The Blues are back in action tomorrow evening when they travel to Reading City in the league before taking on Wokingham & Emmbrook, also away from home on Saturday afternoon.
Farnham Town currently top the Combined Counties Premier Division South with 36 points. Their tie against Snodland Town of the Southern Counties East League Premier Division was abandoned after 19 minutes on Saturday due to an injury to one of the linesmen. A qualified official was identified in the crowd who was willing to step in for the injured official, however, after speaking with the referee, it was decided the best course of action was to postpone the match.
