Ovenden couldn't be prouder after Blues claim consecutive 3-0 victories

Two consecutive 3-0 wins have lifted Marlow into the dizzy heights of third place in the Isthmian League South Central Division and captain Chris Ovenden says he couldn’t be prouder of his side.

The Blues first overcame Chipstead on Saturday thanks to Peter Wedgeworth (own goal), Dawid Rogalski, and Junaid Bell. Then, on Tuesday night, Bell was on target again along with Luke Maguire (own goal) and Naheer-Omar Nawaf against Ashford Town.

The only blemish on Marlow’s performance against the Tangerines was the contentious dismissal of Adam Green in the 72nd minute. But, as manager Mark Bartley emphasised at full-time, it was unable to send his side off-track.

At full-time, he tweeted: “A punch perfect Tuesday night performance from us yielded three points and another clean sheet. Our desire and relentlessness in possession was only bettered by our intensity and focus when out of possession. Not even an extremely harsh red card was going to derail us.”

Echoing his boss’ thoughts, Ovenden told the Advertiser: “The last two games, we’ve really set the precedent of where we want to be.

“The way we’ve controlled possession well, defended aggressively, and been effective going forward has been great to see. We were proven, deserved winners.

“I’m very proud of the team but we know it’s a long season and the work has only just begun. We are gelling more and more as the season continues and starting to deliver what Barts, Phil and Steads ask of us on the pitch. So, it’s great to see that togetherness and understanding paying off with the recent results.”

Ovenden added: “Junaid has been great this season and really made the role (attacking midfield) his own. He’s got bags of potential, so the more goals he can get us the better.

“We’ve got the league cup away at Binfield on Tuesday which is a good opportunity to get some minutes into the players that need it and then all focus goes back to the league with Merstham away on October 1 where we will be targeting three points again.”
