Saplings were planted as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy initiative in the grounds of a junior and an infant school in Farnham Common last week.

Farnham Common Village Schools (comprising of Farnham Common Infant School and Farnham Common Junior School) ordered the hedgerow saplings and hope to create more natural habitats for wildlife in the area.

At the infant school, the saplings are being used to create a hedgerow to help deal with flood issues and at the junior school the saplings are being planted around the perimeter of the quiet garden, which is currently being updated, to create more outdoor learning opportunities for children.

The tree planting ceremony kicked off at 10am at the infant school on Thursday, November 17 where executive headteacher David Masters and Cllr Dev Dhillon (Con, Farnham Common and Burnham Beeches) both made a speech and planted a sapling each with the help of the children.

Attendees then made their way to the junior school to meet the eco-committee and plant the next two saplings.

This was followed by a tea and coffee reception for guests in the library.

School governors and Friends of FCVS were also in attendance at the planting events.

School business manager Donna Evans who organised the planting, said: “We really wanted to be a part of this project and since the passing of her majesty it feels even more poignant to plant these saplings and be a part of this green initiative.

“We are excited to now plant the rest of our saplings, one of our governors and our site team are going to be busy working on this over the next few weeks. We can't wait to get the children involved in nurturing the saplings and watching them grow.”
