The Thames Valley East Masaajid Council (TVMC) Inter-Mosque Football Tournament took place on Sunday and was supported by 11 mosques from around area, including Slough, Windsor and Maidenhead, who pooled together to organise a ‘highly successful first event’ at Slough Town’s home ground.
More than 250 youngsters aged seven to 16 from across the region enjoyed a day full of team spirit, friendly competition and valuable life lessons in front of a ‘packed’ crowd.
The community-driven initiative looks to promote social connection, physical fitness and positive life choices among youngsters.
The tournament provided a chance for young people to get involved in healthy physical activity, learn the importance of teamwork and develop life skills such as resilience, discipline, and leadership.
The event also established a platform for fostering emotional and social wellbeing, helping younger participants create strong relationships with their peers, develop a positive self-image and learn to manage their emotions in a competitive environment.
TVMC is a conglomerate of mosques situated in Slough, Maidenhead, Windsor and Runnymede.
It represents Muslim communities in the area and partners statutory and non-statutory organisations, as well as other religious communities to boost religious and racial harmony in the region.
Dr Arshad Jarral, TVMC chairman, said: “I am proud that TVMC, with support from local mosques, is identifying gaps created by cuts in public services, and seizing the initiative and being creative in supporting young people in the region.
“It is important that we empower young people through sport and other social activities to support their future development.”
Haroon Iqbal, tournament organiser, said: “We believe that sports have the power to change lives.
“Our goal was to use this tournament as a means to encourage young people to pursue positive activities, set goals, and stay committed to their personal growth.
“By giving them the tools and support they need, we aim to help them make choices that lead to a successful and fulfilling life.”
