Boyne Hill's u11s girls’ team were triumphant at the softball cricket tournament they hosted last week, defeating a spirited Cookham Dean team in the final.

The tournament was held for the second time on Sunday last week and saw 12 teams competing for honours.

Nearly 100 girls took part with each side playing three group games each.

Boyne Hill, Cookham Dean, Stoke Green and Actonians advanced to the knock-out rounds, with Hill and Dean booking their places in the final.

Despite the soaring temperatures, the event provided a terrific showcase for girls’ cricket. The players then enjoyed a well-earned barbeque.

Tournament organiser, Jack Spencer-Jones, said: “For me this was more important than just cricket.

“It was about showing the local community that girls can play cricket to a very high standard, and it shows how far the sport has come and how far it can go going forward.

“The tournament is a great example of the growing popularity of women and girls’ cricket both at Boyne Hill and in Berkshire.”

Next year's tournament is set to take place on Sunday, July 16 and any interested teams should contact Jack at Boyne Hill to get involved.

Hill are also growing their girls’ section at u9s, u11s and u13s with both softball and hardball cricket available and the club keen to hear from players of all abilities. The teams currently provide a pathway into the women's section for girls and women aged 14 and over.

Training for the girls and women's teams take place every Thursday and Friday evening at the club.

The girls, aged from u6s (year 1) to u13s (year 8) train on Fridays from 6-7.30pm, while the women's team (u14s or year 9 plus) train from 6.45-8pm. These sessions will be continuing until September. All abilities are welcome.
