With just six matches left to play, Slough still retain an outside chance of taking the title, after Saturday's convincing nine-wicket win over bottom club Buckingham Town left them just 33 points adrift of new leaders Wokingham.

In what must be the most congested Home Counties Division 1 table in recent years, just 52 points separate first from eighth place, and all those sides could yet have a major say in the destination of this summer's title.

Slough, who sit seventh as it stands, would have to overhaul several clubs to lift silverware in the coming weeks, including Henley who they visit on Saturday, but if they can find some form between now and the end of the campaign, they can't be ruled out of the equation entirely.

Whatever happens it's been a very solid season for Slough on their return to the top Home Counties Division, and, with five wins, two draws and a couple of very narrow defeats, captain Nadeem Syed can be proud of what they've achieved so far. He says they played an almost perfect game against Buckingham on Saturday, restricting them to 153 all out before chasing it down in 21.4 overs for the loss of one wicket. Sheridon Gumbs finished on 53 not out and Dan Lincoln on 55 not out. Saif Zaib also managed 38.

Syed, who took 5-62 in the win, said: “We bowled very well and put them under pressure. Kept them to under 160 and chased it down with only one wicket down. There was nothing more I could have asked for. I bowled well, Ali (Akbar Raja, who took 5-33) bowled well and so did others. We took our chances with catches and batting wise it was a good performance. We finished the chase in the right fashion. I was confident we would chase it down and the wicket improved on the day.

“I look at the league in a very positive way, we're only 30-odd points off the top and if we were to manage two wins in a row, you never know, anything could happen. That's the way we're thinking about it.

“Saturday (at Henley) will be a good game. They've got a strong outfit but then so do we. I feel that we've got the talent to beat any team on our day, so we just need to do what we do well.

“If we could finish with six wins that would be a really exciting season, I think six wins would probably put us at the top. Cricket is a funny game, and you can't discount anything.”
