Major repair works planned at historic Cookham Bridge

09:57AM, Thursday 27 April 2023

This week’s public notices include plans for major maintenance works at Cookham Bridge this summer.

Routine inspections of the grade II-listed river crossing in Ferry Lane have identified several structural defects.

Windsor and Maidenhead council said this could impact the structural integrity of the bridge if maintenance works are not carried out.

The following works are set to get underway this summer:

  • Repainting of all exposed steelwork
  • Installation of two new steel trimmer beams to strengthen the deck ends
  • Replacement of the four structural bearings, above the north and south abutments
  • Re-waterproofing and re-surfacing of the bridge deck
  • Replacement of the deck expansion joints

Cookham Bridge was originally built in 1867 with the current iron structure replacing a wooden bridge, sited on the historic ferry crossing.

The bridge has not been subject to any major maintenance work since the 1980s.

The council said extensive work is required to ensure the crossing remains ‘fit for purpose’.

The local authority is aiming to retain as much of the existing fabric of the bridge as possible.

Traffic

A road closure is planned in Holmanleaze later next month.

The Royal Borough said the road will be shut from the entrance to the Ivy Leaf Club car park in a southwards direction towards the dead end.

The closure will be in place from 12.01am on Monday, May 15 to 11.59pm on May 22.

Works will be taking place to install a new power connection for a nearby development.

School Lane in Cookham will be partially closed for a weekend in May.

Drivers will be unable to use the road between its junction with the A4094 Sutton Road westwards to the eastern boundary of a property known as Malt Cottage.

The closure has been authorised so new fibre connection works can take place.

The road will be shut between 9.30am and 3pm on Saturday, May 13 and Sunday, May 14.
