Baylis Court pupils master coding at Heathrow challenge day

Coding skills were put to the test as students from Baylis Court School took part in the Heathrow Secondary School Challenge.

This year’s challenge focused on coding and is based on the 21 driverless ‘pods’ which are used at the airport to transport passengers from business car parks to Terminal 5.

On Tuesday, year eight pupils at the school in Gloucester Avenue were divided into teams and set the challenge of building their own driverless pods out of Lego.

The challenge ended with a pod race between the teams.

Now in its seventh year, the Heathrow Secondary School Challenge gives young people the chance to learn new skills in areas such as engineering and technology.

Heathrow CEO, John Holland-Kaye, said: “This year’s challenge not only teaches young people new skills but also encourages team working and social interaction, and it’s lots of fun too.”

About 15 schools from the boroughs of Slough, Ealing, Hounslow, Hillingdon and Spelthorne are due to take part throughout March and April.
