Historic parade at Windsor Castle opens to public for first time in new trial

An Armed Forces parade could soon become a regular display at Windsor Castle – after being hidden from the public for centuries.

As part of a new trial, visitors to the Royal Households in London and Windsor will have the chance to enjoy additional spectacles to the Changing of the Guard ceremonies.

The British Army said it is ‘proud’ to share more of its ceremonial excellence with the public, offering visitors a richer and more frequent opportunity to witness these traditions.

The Captain's Inspection will be accessible to the public in Windsor most weekdays, while the Sunday Parade will be a weekend fixture in London.

These ceremonies have been core military traditions for centuries, but were typically carried out in silence and away from public view.

Now on public display, they will offer visitors a glimpse into these historic events.

Changing of the Guard at Windsor Castle usually takes place at 11am within the Castle grounds on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

On all other days is The Captain’s Inspection – a formal inspection that ensures 'the highest standards are always maintained'. This will be at 3pm.

The first Captain's Inspection at Windsor Castle is scheduled for Monday, April 14, with the 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards unit and musical support from the Band of the Irish Guards.

The Sunday Parade is a fixture at Buckingham Palace and St James’s Palace in London on Sundays at 11am.

Here, the Colour of the King’s Guard will be ‘trooped’ in front of the Guard at Buckingham Palace before being marched to St James’s Palace in an 18th-century ‘Lodging the Colour’ ceremony.

The British Army are piloting these ceremonial changes in collaboration with the Royal Household, the Metropolitan Police, the Royal Parks, Thames Valley Police and the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead.

The pilot will 'efficiently' use soldiers and service personnel already on duty to deliver these ceremonial duties.

When operational commitments allow, the Bands of the Household Division will also provide musical accompaniment, making the experience even more vibrant and memorable.

To avoid disappointment, the public should check the official Duties Rota on the Household Division website for the latest schedule.
