Visitors can wiggle, munch and transform in a new trail this month to experience one of nature’s greatest transformations.
Cliveden will host a journey inspired by Eric Carle’s beloved and iconic children’s book The Very Hungry Caterpillar this May.
This new trail brings to life the best-selling story of the tiny caterpillar who hatches from an egg, is very hungry and eats through several fruits and snacks each day.
The caterpillar then forms a chrysalis around itself and, after some time, emerges as a butterfly.
Families can wiggle along the trail, follow the illustrated signs and spot the fruits and snacks hidden around the garden before emerging as a butterfly through a 3D cocoon.
Visitors to several National Trust places can see The Very Hungry Caterpillar come to life through illustrated trail markers, QR codes, augmented reality, giant food posts, games and activities.
Children will learn fun facts inspired by this classic tale, the days of the week, counting, and the life cycle of a butterfly, all within the setting of the spring gardens at Cliveden.
Visitors can win a small prize when they complete the trail using a free The Very Hungry Caterpillar trail sheet.
Alongside each character board is a QR code that, once scanned, provides fun facts for hungry young minds, augmented reality face filters and brass rubbing stations inspired by the storybook.
Award-winning creator of interactive theatrical events, Bakehouse Factory, collaborated with the National Trust in London and the South East to present the trail.
National Trust experiences curator Robynn Finney said: "Much like our National Trust places, Eric Carle's The Very Hungry Caterpillar remains a cherished part of childhoods across the UK and beyond.
“We are delighted to collaborate with Bakehouse to bring this beloved story to life with trails that inspire new generations to learn about one of nature’s greatest transformations by following the exciting and delicious journey of the world’s most famous caterpillar."
Eric Carle is acclaimed and beloved as the creator of innovatively designed picture books for young children, and sold more than 175 million copies of his books globally.
The World of Eric Carle nurtures a child’s love of literature and learning, encouraging imaginative play and exploration and is trusted by parents, teachers, and librarians.
The Very Hungry Caterpillar opens at Cliveden on May 10 and runs until June 29 2025.
