A ‘glamorous’ and ‘amazing’ lady celebrated her 106th birthday at Foxleigh Grove nursing home on Tuesday with a tea party organised by the staff.
Rose Myers, who lived in Bray for more than 60 years, celebrated the day with friends and family and plenty of birthday cake at the nursing home in Forest Green Road, Holyport.
Described as ‘ladylike’ and ‘always smiling’ by staff, Rose opened cards and presents on Tuesday afternoon to mark the occasion.
Henrietta Cohen, her niece, drove from north London to wish Rose a happy birthday.
She said: “She must have lived in Bray for well over 60 years, she was very involved with the community.
“She used to deliver the parish magazine around the village well into her 90s.
“She was also a secretary for a solicitor who happened to be my father-in-law.”
Rose was the third oldest of eight siblings and was born in Leicester before the family moved to Hackney in 1914.
She married her husband Percy in her twenties and the couple later moved to a cottage opposite St Michael’s Church in Bray.
Henrietta said: “My fondest memory of her is when I was younger. I would go for tea round hers. Her and Percy had a boat and they would take me and my brother out on it and then we would have tea on her beautiful blue and white china plates. Now I own the tea pot. They didn’t have any children and they would treat us a lot.”
Rose moved to the care home in November 2012.
Henrietta said: “She had lots of lovely friends, which meant she was able to live in her cottage for so long as they all looked out for her, a lot of them still visit.”
Rose’s younger sister Ray Bloch said: “She was always very glamorous. What a wonderful birthday.”
Mark Aram, manager of Foxleigh Grove said: “We are honoured to be looking after Rose, one of our oldest members at the fantastic age of 106. Having Rose is such a pleasure.”
After opening her gifts, as well as cards from the Queen and St Michael’s Church, Rose said: “It’s all wonderful, thank you all so much.”
