The sweetest songs that they can sing (oh baby)

Chart-topping soul band The Real Thing promise to keep the crowd dancing all night with hits which boosted Liverpool’s musical reputation in the 1970s.

The band, who formed in 1970, are inspired by the work of Earth Wind and Fire, Parliament and Marvin Gaye.

The Real Thing’s singer, Eddie Amoo, said: “There will always be a market for our type of songs, they’ve got danceability and they’re easy to sing along to.

“I was speaking to a DJ who said ‘if I put on your songs the dancefloor fills up’ and this carries on into our concerts.”

The Real Thing, famous for You To Me Are Everything and many hits, continually tour and have played shows in Europe, Singapore and Indonesia. They are set to go on their first tour of Australia in October.

As well as having a wide following, the band’s music has been passed down across generations.

“Because we’ve been together for so long, a lot of our fans listened to us as kids and were passed our music by their parents. Anyone can relate to our songs.”

“We know our audience and that’s what we aim at.”

The band still try and keep their tours fresh and give something new for veterans who may have seen them many times.

“We love the hip-hop thing and we incorporate that into our show in our own way which helps to keep it real and it fresh.

Eddie is particularly proud of the balance the band has between feel-good dancey hits and serious social commentary, including their hit Children of the Ghetto.

“The crowd are going to get the hits, the covers and the serious side, it’s a well rounded show and believe me people who’ve seen us know that after one of our gigs the crowd are absolutely shattered from dancing.”
