1974: Robots and Wombles were among the entries in a fancy dress competition at Ellington Infants School.

The competition took place as part of the school’s summer fair.
1979: A tornado ripped through Windsor, damaging more than 100 properties.
Maidenhead was left mainly untouched, but a disused barn at Orchard Farm in Littlewick Green was left in ruins.

The owner of the farm, Arthur Westacott, said he saw the leaves and branches of a large tree being ‘whirled around and upwards’ on the morning of the storm, but he did not realise the damage that had been done until later.
The middle section of the 200ft barn had been wrecked.
1979: The youth section of Maidenhead Town Football Club held its annual presentation evening at All Saints Junior School.

Prizewinners included Nicky Sawers, who received the player of the year award, from club president Maurice Hayes.
1994: The playing field at St Mary’s School had an air of Royal Ascot about it when the Furze Platt Scout Group’s 23rd donkey derby got under starter’s orders.

Punters turned out at the annual race meeting in their hundreds and organisers hoped the event had raised more than £3,000 for Scout funds.
1999: In an effort to encourage reading, the Royal Borough devised the Dads into School day as part of a broader literacy initiative called Kick-Off.

Primary schools in Maidenhead invited fathers of pupils to come in and read and do other work with children.
1999: It was a family affair at Maidenhead Nursery School when the young pupils’ brothers and sisters came along to play.

Adults – including the Mayor, Cllr Sandra Hopkins – also joined in the fun at the nursery’s community toddler day.
