Maidenhead Fire Station has undergone a revamp ‘transforming’ it into a modern space that caters to a ‘diverse’ mixed sex workforce – among other changes.

It is also hoped that it will allow the fire service to work ‘more closely’ with the ambulance.

Finally, there have been some tweaks to make the new-look fire station more environmentally friendly.

Work began in September last year to refurbish Maidenhead Fire Station to make it a ‘fit-for-purpose, modern workplace.’

The final stage of Maidenhead Fire Station’s refurbishment programme has now reached completion.

It involved ‘extensive works’ being carried out on the station while maintaining its operations.

The first floor of the station has been ‘completely transformed’ from small, individual office spaces to a bright open-plan office with two meeting rooms and additional meeting space for staff, supporting a one team approach to working.

The communal dormitory space was removed and re-provided as individual rooms on the first floor.

In addition to this, both the female and male shower and toilet areas have undergone a complete upgrade with both areas now including individual shower, changing, and WC facilities.

“This upgrade supports our continued commitment to building a diverse workforce,” said a spokesperson for Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service (RBFRS), in charge of the station.

“We recognise the value that this will bring to our service and in turn, the communities we serve.”

During the works, the space available for South Central Ambulance Service (SCAS) was relocated to improve access for ambulance crews.

This will ‘continue to support the relationships and opportunities for fire and ambulance crews to work more closely together.’

Maidenhead Fire Station has introduced a zoning system to help improve the control of fire contaminants, which are the chemical products of fire combustion.

Finally, LED lighting was fitted into all refurbished areas ‘to support sustainability across the station'.

“This refurbishment project has significantly transformed the station and has made it a more fit-for-purpose, modern workplace,” the RBFRS spokesperson said.

“Throughout the project station staff were extremely engaging and supportive.

“The improvements lay the foundations to provide better facilities for our future needs and workforce.”
