Celebrations to mark Burnham Library’s half centenary began on Monday, October 3, with a trip down memory lane to 1973.

Library staff members and volunteers donned flares and hippy shades and dressed like characters from the hit movie Grease in a tribute to the decade when the Windsor Road facility was officially opened.

To mark the occasion, a special 1970s-themed coffee morning took place with drinks, cakes and even a ‘Black Forest gateau’.

Singing 4 the Memory, a group which meets at the Library twice a month, performed songs from the 1970s to complete the celebrations.

With each week throughout October a new decade will be celebrated with lots of ‘80s, ‘90s and noughties- themed activities in store.

The week commencing Monday, October 9 will see the Library celebrating all things from the 1980s and the movies ET and Footloose will be shown.

The following week it’s the turn of the 1990s and films like Sister Act and Matilda will be the centre of focus.

The following week ‘The Noughties’ will be celebrated with screenings of films The Lion King and Mamma Mia.

Keen Burnham historians can attend a talk on ‘The History of Burnham Library’ on Tuesday, October 24, delivered by the chairman of the Friends of Burnham Library, Andrew Strathdee.

And on Saturday, October 28 a revamped Children’s Area will be opened and a time capsule entitled ‘Memories of Burnham Library’ will be buried.

Clive Harriss, cabinet member for culture and leisure at Buckinghamshire Council, said: “We are delighted to help Burnham Community Library mark its milestone 50th anniversary.

“This popular library has always been at the very heart of the local community.

“I would like to thank all the staff and volunteers, past and present, for their hard work over the years.

“I would also like to say thank you to all the loyal customers.

“Many will have joined the library as children all those years ago and now visit as adults with their own children and grandchildren. The month-long programme of events being put on by the library will give everyone a chance to pop along to enjoy the different themed celebrations, so please come along and join in the fun.”
