Flackwell Heath claimed a convincing win over league rivals Broadfields United on Tuesday to advance in the Premier Division Cup and, with the side in action against Ardley United in the third round of the Gladwish Challenge Trophy next Tuesday, they’ve given themselves every chance of collecting silverware this season.

Having not had a game for two weeks due to COVID issues and postponements the Heathens came into this week’s tie a little short on match practice, but you wouldn’t have known it as they swept to a comfortable 3-0 win.

Fabian Driffill, Adam Thomas, and Matthew Ayres grabbed the goals while young Jack Timberlake made his home debut, assisting two of the three goals.

Overall, it was a satisfying night for manager Chris Ayres.

“It was good just to be out playing again,” he said.

“We hadn’t played for two and a half weeks due to COVID and postponements. We travelled all the way to Baldock on Saturday only to be told the game was off when we arrived so that was a bit of a nightmare. But we managed to get the pitch playable last night and we ran out comfortable winners in the end. First half was quite close but in the second half we ran our worthy winners.

“We had 20 players available last night so there's plenty of competition for places and the cups gives us a chance to move people around, because it's difficult for players to go Saturday/Tuesday. Still being in two competitions gives us something to look forward to.

“Ardley next week will be another difficult game. We’ve played them twice this season and they've both been very tough games.”

The Spartan South Premier Division Cup is just for teams in their league while the Gladwish Challenge Trophy also encompasses sides from the Spartan South Division 1.

Flackwell return to league action at Oxhey Jets on Saturday, looking to make further inroads to the sides in the top five. They currently sit eighth but have matches in hand on the sides above them.
