Colourful karts will be whizzing downhill in Cookham Dean this September as the popular Gravity Grand Prix returns for another year.

Organisers and local charity fundraisers, The Cherry Pickers of Cookham Dean, have revealed that entries are already full for the eighteenth annual event on Sunday, September 14.

The thrilling extravaganza sees karts race one at a time from the start of the course at the junction of Church Road to the finish just uphill from Uncle Tom’s Cabin on Hills Lane.

The event site will open at midday and racing will run from 1pm to about 4.30pm.

Visitors can see the karts in the pits at the top of Spring Lane from around 10am.

Past entries have included grand pianos, fire engines, double-decker buses, porcupines, bathtubs and fairy castles.

Upwards of 3,000 people are expected to attend, to enjoy an action-packed day featuring entertainment and plenty of food and drink.

The largest crowds are expected at the Old Cricket Common, where a beer and Pimm’s tent will be hosted alongside a range of food stalls offering roast pork, burgers, pizzas and other treats.

The event looks to raise around £20,000 for the Thames Valley Air Ambulance and other local good causes.

Max Stevenson, chair of The Gravity Grand Prix, said: “We limit the number of karts to around 30 to ensure we can get plenty of race time for each entrant.

“We are especially pleased this year to have a good spread between the racing karts and the fun karts which owners have spent the last few months building.

“The speed merchants will be trying to beat the new course record, set last year, of 1 minute and 7 seconds to complete the 500-metre course.

“The fun karts will be competing to win the trophies for Spirit of the Event and Best Novelty Kart.”

Entry into the event and the event programme are both free and there will be parking available on the day, including an area reserved for guests with mobility difficulties.
