Lucander (far side) beats Jewel in My Crown
--
Trainer Ralph Beckett and jockey Rob Hornby were in the winner’s enclosure at Windsor last Monday at the start of a big week for them, culminating in the Derby on Saturday.
They will be represented at Epsom by Westover, who has a good chance of causing an upset. The son of superstar Frankel has finished in the first two on his four starts so far and looks good each-way value at 20-1.
Stablemate Lucander may not be in the same class as Westover but did well to defy top weight in a good quality handicap 10-furlong handicap at the Thames-side track.
For the second week running, racegoers had to contend with rain during the evening and there was also a minute’s silence before the first race following the death of racing legend Lester Piggott last weekend.
Trainer Richard Hannon has an excellent record at Windsor and he recorded another two wins with 6/4 favourite Pure Dreamer and Mount Kosciusz (3/1), both ridden by Sean Levey.
The latest qualifier in the Fitzdares Sprint Series went the way of the Clive Cox-trained Get It (7/4 fav) ridden by John Fahy, having dictated the five-furlong race from virtually the start.
Owner Linda Alexander was particularly delighted to see Priors Dell
(15/2) win the second race on the card as she bred the horse trained by William Muir and Chris Grassick.
The two-year-old, with Silvestre De Sousa aboard, was making a big step forward from his only previous start when he went off at 100/1 and finished down the field at Newbury earlier in May.
Windsor’s meeting next Monday will have a Platinum Jubilee theme, with a marching pipe band and other live music. The first of seven races is due off at 5.05.
