Home Secretary James Cleverly visited Windsor to discuss Thames Valley Police (TVP) initiatives to combat violence against women and girls on December 15.
Mr Cleverly, along with minister for victims and safeguarding Laura Farris, met with police representatives including Thames Valley police and crime commissioner and the TVP chief constable, during the visit.
The visit came ahead of a government announcement on Monday (December 18) which included updating drink spiking laws and research into drug self-testing kits, to help police and venues determine quickly if a drink has been spiked.
Police and crime commissioner, Matthew Barber said:
“I was pleased to welcome the Home Secretary to Windsor and, together with the Chief Constable, have the opportunity to showcase some of the great work that Thames Valley Police is doing to tackle violence against women and girls in the night time economy through Project Vigilant, as well as supporting venues that participate in the national Ask for Angela initiative."
Project Vigilant involves uniformed and plain clothes officers patrolling in areas outside nightclubs, bars and pubs to identify individuals displaying signs of predatory behaviour.
This includes behaviour such as sexual harassment, inappropriate touching and loitering.
The Ask for Angela initiative is a UK-wide scheme whereby people who feel unsafe at bars or clubs and other licensed venues can seek help discreetly.
By approaching venue staff and asking them for ‘Angela’, this will signpost that a person is seeking help and staff will then be able to offer appropriate support. Potentially contacting police or calling for a taxi to get the person home.
More information on Ask for Angela can be found here.
We welcomed the Home Secretary & Safeguarding Minister to Windsor to show what we’re doing to keeping people safe during Christmas party season.
