Football round-up: Maidenhead United fall to defeat in seven goal thriller but Slough Town secure first win of the year against Dartford

Halifax Town 5, Maidenhead United 2

A catalogue of errors handed The Magpies a 5-2 defeat to Halifax Town on Saturday.

United enjoyed a promising start to the game but a lack of clinical finishing partnered with Halifax's resolute defending kept the game level in the opening exchanges. Danny Whitehall's early strike was blocked by Clarke and debutant Ody Alfa was unlucky not to get a shot away inside the first half an hour.

But the hosts scored first and were on fine form to break the deadlock, Charlie Cooper opening the scoring with a well-taken strike. Halifax pressured well looking for a second goal before the break, but seemingly against the run of play, Maidenhead equalised on the stroke of half time after Ryan Upward nodded in Danny Whitehall's free kick.

The Shaymen restored their lead just after the hour with Devante Rodney beating Joe Ellul for pace before sending the ball to Jack Redshaw who couldn't miss. Halifax went two goals clear just six minutes later after Rodney's shot hit Seth Twumasi and wrong-footed Taye Ashby-Hammond between the sticks.

Maidenhead had a chance to shrink the deficit on the 75th minute when Twumasi's cross found Whitehall who headed towards goal. The ball was deflected off a Halifax man but Upward couldn't react quick enough to pick up the loose ball and fire in another.

Halifax punished the Magpies in the closing stages and scored their fourth on the 83rd minute after Ellul slipped and substitute Jamie Allen was able to roll the ball home. Then, Michael Duckworth fired home Halifax’s fifth on the 89th minute after Maidenhead failed to clear Ashby-Hammonds’ s save. Bernard Mensah scored in stoppage time to reduce the arrears.

The result will give Alan Devonshire cause for concern who is trying to keep his men afloat and above the relegation spots. They play Halesowen Town in the FA Trophy next and will re-visit the Shay in the tournament's next round should they progress on Tuesday night.

Slough Town 1, Dartford 0

Dan Roberts scored the only goal of the game to give the Rebels their first win of 2020 and keep them firmly in contention for a play off place.

It was a vital three points for Neil Baker and Jon Underwood’s side who hadn’t tasted victory in a fair few games and faced an in form Dartford who had picked up five consecutive wins leading up to the tie.

Slough thought they had got off to a flying start when Roberts swept home a cross on the 12th minute only for it to be ruled out for offside. A few minutes later, the hosts came close again. Following a corner, the ball found Warren Harris who drilled in a low cross towards Sam Togwell who dummied for Ryan Bird, who concluded the move with an effort that flew wide and over the bar.

The Rebels were eventually rewarded for their efforts on the 34th minute. George Wells won the ball on the halfway line, with Dartford well up the field, and drove forward into space before hitting a trademark long shot. The ball swayed and moved in the air and Sesay was only able to parry the ball. Roberts reacted quickest to poach a goal and give his side the ascendancy.

The result lifts Slough up to third place in National League South. They travel to Braintree Town next Saturday.
