Match report: Maidenhead United frustrate Harrogate Town with draw

Match report: Maidenhead United frustrate Harrogate Town with draw

Maidenhead United 1-1 Harrogate Town

Maidenhead United ended their two-game losing streak with a 1-1 draw against Harrogate Town at York Road, on Saturday.

The Sulphurites started the game off the better side, with attacking pressure from Alex Bradley giving Maidenhead hard work in the early stages by cannoning a shot against the bar on the eighth minute.

The deadlock was broken a minute later with Sam Jones heading in his first goal for Town and fire his side into the lead through a well-worked cross from Bradley.

The lead lasted just over ten minutes however, as Shamir Fenelon levelled the scoring with an incredible finish. The number seven picked up the ball on the outside of the box before rolling it out from of his feet and hit it with incredible technique over Belshaw.

Alan Devonshire's side continued to pose a threat down the other end with Ryan Upward trying his best to put his side in front. Several crosses were floated into the Harrogate box but the striker was unable to steer the looping balls into the net.

After the break, defender Joe Ellul was substituted off after going down clutching his shoulder from a nasty tackle, with Remy Clerima taking his place.

Moments later, Maidenhead had penalty shouts waved away by referee Elliot Swallow after Jake Cassidy appeared to have been brought down inside the penalty box following a corner.

With ten minutes of normal time left to play, skipper Alan Massey denied Mark Beck an opportunity to snatch the win by clearing his header off the line and scramble a follow-up shot from Brendan Kieran away.

The full-time whistle ensured the points were to be shared. Both sides could have benefitted from claiming the win with Maidenhead unfortunate not to climb into fourth place, and Harrogate unable to distance themselves from the bottom of the National League table.

Maidenhead United are back in action at York Road on Tuesday night, hosting Dover Athletic on September, 24, at 7.45pm.
