As the Slough and surrounding regions slowly begin to emerge from the Covid-19 pandemic, one business reflects on 60 years of serving the community.
Since opening its doors back in 1960 H.J Newman Funeral Directors has been at the forefront, supporting families in the Slough and Windsor regions through their bereavement.
Whilst the business has grown and adapted to the needs of a diverse multicultural community, one thing remains as Harold Newman envisaged it over 60 years ago.
A family focused funeral service, one which has managed to ensure a family member has been on hand to take care of customers every day of trading.
Harold Newman the founder was a well respected member of the community from a young age representing the England youth football team in his teenage years, before serving as a Grenadier Guard for over 17 years.
“My father had many historic stories to tell, including his recounts of the occasions where he was responsible for guarding the Queen as a child playing in the Windsor Castle gardens,” recalled Eric Newman, son and owner of H.J Newman.
“Like many veterans he had many experiences to tell but would never speak of his service during the D-Day and Dunkirk conflicts.”
After a distinguished military career Harold eventually left the armed services for civilian life in 1948.
Becoming a local County Councilor Harold again served his local community for a number of years and was one of the last Alderman’s of Slough.
With a history of running several very successful local businesses -including South Bucks Coaches located in the very yard where Newman’s currently stands - in 1960 he eventually established H.J Newman Funeral Directors (originally trading as Newman & Son) with a very clear vision.
That vision 'to provide a trusted and caring approach to funeral services in Berkshire' remains at the core of the family run business today.
Harold was joined running the business by his son Eric in 1962 and later on by his daughter-in-law Petula in 1979.
Eric and Petula eventually took over running the business in 2002 when Harold sadly passed away.
Today, 60 years later the business remains firmly in the family with the third and fourth generation continuing Harold’s legacy.
Whilst the business of Funeral Services remains relatively unchanged, the landscape of those providing bereavement services has seen significant transformation.
“We are not alone in our experiences. Like many other sectors, larger groups have been slowly taking over small independent businesses, but I’m extremely proud to be able to say after 60 years that we remain one of the very few remaining Independent family run Funeral Directors in Slough,” commented Eric.
In celebration of 60 years serving the local communities of Slough Windsor and surrounding areas and as a tribute to Harold the business was renamed from the original Newman and Son to H.J Newman Funeral Directors earlier this year.
Eric and Petula would like to thank all our customers and staff over the last 60 years and look forward to serving the community for many years to come.
