One hundred years of the Women’s Institute (WI) was celebrated in Stoke Poges as the Centenary Baton dropped in.
The baton, which has been travelling through England and Wales, was taken to St Giles Church in Church Street on Monday.
“It was a great success,” said Claire Rose, secretary of the Stoke Poges and Wexham WI.
“We had no idea how many were going to turn up, it is a difficult thing to judge. Fortunately we were quite surprised, there was a good turnout of people.”
Aside from seeing the baton, visitors could also take part in guided tours of the church and the memorial garden.
A reading of poet Thomas Gray’s Elegy also took place next to his tombstone.
The WI branch was told it would be part of the centenary route last year.
“We were delighted,” Claire added.
The WI started in Britain in 1915. The first branch was in Anglesey in North Wales. The baton will end up at the WI AGM at the Royal Albert Hall in June.
