Exhibition looks at Matisse’s later work

AN exhibition focusing on the French artist Henri Matisse’s celebrated “cut-out” period opens at Henley’s River and Rowing Museum tomorrow (Saturday).

The work of Matisse, who died in 1954 aged 84, is today revered for its extraordinary richness and luminosity of colour.

Matisse: Drawing With Scissors is being staged in partnership with London’s Hayward Gallery and runs until Sunday, January 8.

The show features 35 lithographic prints of the famous cut-outs produced in the last four years of the artist’s life, including iconic images such as The Snail and the Blue Nude series.

On Saturday, November 12, at 11.30am the Mill Meadows museum is hosting an hour-long talk on Matisse by history of art lecturer Sandra Smith. Entry is £5.



Later that day, a children’s workshop themed around the artist is being held at 4.30pm, costing £25.

The River and Rowing Museum is open from 10am to 5pm daily. An annual pass is £11 for adults (£10 concessions) and £9 for children aged four and over.
