Victims of an aggravated burglary were threatened with what is thought to have been a shotgun after a man entered their home and stole valuable items.

Thames Valley Police is appealing for witnesses after the raid in Fishery Road at 6.50pm yesterday.

A woman in her 50s and a man in his 20s reported that a burglar entered the home via an unlocked rear door with what appeared to be a gun.

He threatened the pair and demanded they hand over valuable items.

Details of the items snatched are still being investigated, but police say it included a large quantity of jewellery.

The suspect was described as white, around 6ft 2ins and stocky, wearing a full balaclava, dark trousers, rain jacket, ski gloves and walking shoes.

He was carrying a black holdall and spoke with a southern British accent.

Detective Inspector Nicky Hurdley, leading the investigation, said: "While this was an extremely frightening ordeal for the victims, they have not suffered any serious physical harm, though they are understandably shaken.

"We are appealing for anyone who was in the area between 6pm and 7pm, or who saw anything suspicious at the time or in the days leading up to this incident to please get in touch as a matter of urgency.

"We are also keen to hear from anyone who has heard anything about this incident or who can help to locate the stolen property or identify the offender.

"Fortunately these types of incidents do not happen in the area very often, but we would advise homeowners to be sure their homes are secure, even when they are at home.

"It is not clear whether this was an opportunist attack, so all safety measures should be remembered and sensible precautions taken."
