Cider-fuelled drunk Jamie Ing, 40, staggered into Bargain Booze in St Marks Road in a 'spur of the moment' decision waving a blade and shouting demands for money.
He was eventually beaten away with a rounders bat by shopkeeper Naranjan Singh, 57, a former amateur wrestler, and his nephew.
The court heard Ing, who has a history of depression, alcohol dependency and violence, had phoned police and confessed just half-an-hour after the failed robbery in June.
He pleaded guilty to attempted armed robbery and was sentenced at Reading Crown Court on Monday.
