Claims for housing and council tax benefits in the Royal Brough are at a record high, according to the latest figures.
About 7,700 people, or 12 per cent of households, are now claiming within the authority.
The figures also show about 70 new claims for housing benefit are being received each week.
A council spokesman said: "We're probably at our highest percentage of claimants at the moment, but still generally lower than most other boroughs."
