Further details have been released this afternoon about plans to knock down Furze Platt Senior School in Maidenhead and move it to a new site which is in the greenbelt.
The school in Furze Platt Road is working with Summerleaze on plans to build a new community campus in Spencer's Farm in the North Town area of the town. Developers hope the school could move into the new site in 2015.
The land between Cookham and Maidenhead could also be the home for new sporting and recreational facilities for both school and community use. It could also make way for 320 new homes - the sale of which will enable funding of the school and community facilities.
The plan is for the existing school site to be replaced with 380 new homes.
The popular school hopes a new could site will mean that it is able to offer more school places.
Summerleaze's executive chairman Peter Prior first announced plans to develop Spencer's Farm in March 2009. The ambitious plan included more than 500 homes. Furze Platt Senior School was not included in the original plans which were not submitted to the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead council. In March 2010 Mr Prior said that the plan was no longer viable because of the state of the economy and that the project needed a re-think.
Today the school and Summerleaze have sent the new proposals to the council to be considered for inclusion in its Borough Local Plan, which sets out the planning priorities for the area over the next 15 years.
School headteacher Tanya White said: "Our buildings are ageing and require substantial maintenance and upgrading. With so little public funding now available for schools we felt we owed it to our pupils to look for other sources of investment."
Mr Prior said: "I am not aware of any other opportunity in Maidenhead that can deliver all these benefits at one stroke."
