Hosepipe ban to be enforced from next month

A hosepipe ban will be imposed across Berkshire from next month.

Thames Water has announced it will be enforcing a ban on residents using hosepipes following two exceptionally dry winters.

In Bucklebury, Berkshire, there has been below average rainfall for 19 of the past 24 months, and groundwater levels are now lower than during the drought of 1976.

A Thames Water spokesman said: "As we can’t control the weather, or predict how much rain will fall this year, everyone needs to play their part in reducing the amount of water they use.

"As a result, we're giving notice to all of our customers that as of April 5 2012, it will be prohibited to draw water through a hosepipe or similar equipment, or fill or maintain a domestic swimming pool, paddling pool or ornamental fountain."

The temporary hosepipe ban will come into effect before the Easter Bank Holiday weekend on Thursday, April 5.
