Clarks confirms its Nicholsons Centre store in Maidenhead will close

Clarks in Nicholsons Shopping Centre is set to close this year

Clarks shoeshop in Maidenhead is set to close by June, the company has confirmed.

In a statement, it said jobs at the Nicholsons Centre store were under consultation and thanked staff for their ‘dedication’.

Clarks has held a presence in Maidenhead town centre for decades, but after the closure, shoppers will have to travel out of the Royal Borough to visit one of its stores.

A spokesperson said: “Clarks confirms its store in Maidenhead, will close in June 2024.

"We have a strong duty of care to all our employees, and we are working closely with the store team as they go through a period of consultation.

“We thank them all for their dedication in serving our customers over the years.

“We’d like to thank our loyal customers who have shopped with us at our Maidenhead store, and we’ll be delighted to continue to serve them with our full range of products online and at our nearby Clarks stores in Beaconsfield, Bracknell, High Wycombe, and Wokingham.”

Plans to redevelop the Nicholsons Centre have long been in the works but progress was halted after a Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) for the site was blocked over the future of Smokey’s nightclub.

However, a settlement has since been reached and the club has now closed. A CPO was then approved in January this year, meaning redevelopment can take place, but further details have not been announced.

Clarks has not said whether it will open a new store in Maidenhead after the redevelopment.
