A Popmaster: Steve Cann reached the last two in the nationwide music quiz finals
A man from Maidenhead has come runner-up in the nationwide finals of radio DJ Ken Bruce’s Popmaster music quiz.
Steve Cann answered all but two questions correctly in the 2023 Champion of Champions Quiz - narrowly missing out on being crowned the winner.
The Popmaster music quiz is has been a long-running feature of Ken Bruce’s show on Greatest Hits Radio following his departure from BBC Radio 2.
Steve said: “I was a little bit disappointed not to win, but also very proud to get to the final.
“I was pleased I got that far - I didn’t realise I was so close at the end and I maybe could have won it if the questions has fallen a little differently.”
Steve won out in an earlier quiz in August and later in the semi-finals, to book his place in the Champion of Champions quiz.
In a close-run final to the 2023 competition, just a single question separated Steve and his opponent: who had a hit in 1998 with the song Amnesia?
“I was thinking for some reason it was Insomnia so I said Faithless, but the answer was Chumbawamba,” said Steve.
“I do remember them but that’s one I could’ve been there all day and I wouldn’t have got it."
He added his fellow finalist had done ‘really well’ to win, also having some tough questions.
The champions of champions quiz took place on December 22 and Steve received an engraved runner-up trophy, a t-shirt and a signed photograph of Ken Bruce at the end of January.
