Charles Ward in St Mark's Hospital will close and all elderly mental health inpatients moved to Reading, NHS bosses decided today.
Patients with mental health issues will be moved from beds in Ascot, Slough and Maidenhead to a specialist centre at Prospect Park Hospital in Reading.
The move will cost Berkshire PCT cluster £5-6million, compared to more than £20million which would be needed to build a new facility.
The decision has taken more than four years, with options first being presented in 2007 before a public consultation in 2010 and further 'engagement' last year.
