The decision to move all mental health inpatients to Reading is due to be made on Tuesday.
The recommendation being discussed by the NHS Berkshire PCT Cluster Board is that all mental health beds in Slough, Ascot and Maidenhead will move to Prospect Park Hospital in Reading.
A time-scale has not been discussed but it is thought the Wexham Park Hospital ward will be the first to move.
The report to the board said the move should go hand in hand with increased investment in community mental health services and transport for relatives and carers who face longer journeys.
The decision follows months of discussion and a public consultation in 2010, followed by the Advertiser's Save Charles Ward campaign last year.
The public board meeting is at 10am at The Centre in Farnham Road, Slough.
