Maidenhead United fail to take first half chances in goalless draw with FC Halifax Town

Maidenhead United 0, FC Halifax Town 0

Maidenhead United ended a run of back-to-back league defeats at York Road, but should really have taken all three points against a stubborn FC Halifax Town side had they taken their first half chance.

Playing with a lively tempo the Magpies dominated the opening period and fashioned out two or three presentable opportunities which weren’t taken.

Ryan Upward bookended the half with chances that came his way. His first , in the fourth minute saw a sweeping shot on the slide saved well by Sam Johnson, while his second on the half-hour would surely have produced a vital first goal of the afternoon had he not slipped when running onto Moses Emmanuel’s cross.

Emmanuel was also guilty of a couple of bad misses. He skewed a header wide in the 14th minute, moments after Sean Marks’ header from Remy Clerima’s cross had bounced back off the crossbar. Emmanuel also scampered onto a flick from Marks midway through the half, but Scott Garner got across to make a last-ditch challenge.

Halifax’s best moments came after the interval. They were largely ineffectual in the first period against Maidenhead’s dominant back-line, but caused the hosts more problems after the arrival of Tom Denton. The lofty striker had been on the field a matter of minutes when Garner’s free-header from a corner produced the save of the match from Carl Pentney on the hour mark.

Then, in the final 10 minutes, Denton grappled with Alan Massey in a bid to turn home Josh MacDonald’s cross, but the Magpies skipper dealt with the danger.

The Magpies were down to their bare bones for this clash, and, without ready-made replacements on the bench, tired as the game wore on. But they carried a threat on the break. Emmanuel misread James Comley’s fine cross a minute or two after the interval before Harry Pritchard’s firm header from a Clerima flick fizzed past the upright. Left-back Rene Steer also tried his luck from distance, but his dipping volley was deflected behind for a corner.

The game petered out as a contest in the final minutes, with both sides seemingly satisfied with a point. However, Maidenhead will be kicking themselves they didn’t take at least one of their first half opportunities.
