Spotlight now on RBWM

Helen Farrell

I am sure the people of Maidenhead are delighted with the promotion of their MP to Prime Minister. However, this now puts a new perspective on the council's wish to re-introduce secondary modern education into the borough through the building of a new grammar school.

Previously this would have been a matter for the community (although so far the council has shown no sign of being interested in the 80 per cent of parents whose children will be in the secondary moderns). Now it is also a matter of concern for all of us outside the borough. I would therefore urge those who are opposed to this proposal to make their views known to the council as a matter of urgency. Those of us who do not want children labelled as failures are counting on you.

For some facts from a journal not normally associated with mad Marxism and levelling things down see: http://blogs.ft.com/ftdata/2013/01/28/grammar-school-myths/

I think the RBWM will open a new grammar school come hell or high water. The major supporter on the council has said things are on schedule. The fatuous justifications that there is substantial public support and that it will be an offering to the great Conservative god of Choice have been repeated - you can't stop this with an overwhelmingly Conservative council so locals - get used to the idea of children from miles away being at the railway station in the morning in the uniform of the as yet unnamed but undoubtedly 'Royal' and 'Grammar' school that will be put on you in the not-too-distant future - you can't stop it.

And of course get used to the idea that your children are going to have a substandard education if the situation in Buckinghamshire is anything to go by.
