A large Indian film crew has been spotted shooting on the road outside Boots, Snappy Snaps and Gregg's in Maidenhead town centre.

The crew has come from Mumbai to shoot this Marathi film - and plugged ahead through the pouring rain last week to get footage in the heart of Maidenhead.

Passer-by Naomi Canton spotted the crews on location and took some snaps.

"I walked past a large Indian film crew shooting with big cameras on the road outside Boots, Snappy Snaps and Gregg's Bakery," she said.

"I asked them what they were doing and they said they had come from Mumbai and had a licence to shoot in Maidenhead.

"It was pouring with rain at the time, so the cameras were covered in bin liners and the main actress had a man wandering around holding an umbrella over her head as she sang a Bollywood film song."

The film is called Kalavati – and according to the Indian press, features ‘an army of veteran actors’ and a famous YouTuber.

Sanjay Jadhav, an acclaimed Indian cinematographer and film director of Bollywood and Marathi cinema, is producing and directing.

Known as ‘the king of romantic comedies,’ the director has opted for a change of pace, now directing his first ever comedy-horror.

In the making for almost four years, it is not yet known for sure when exactly Kalavati will hit the big screens, though it is predicted to be sometime this year.

The main actress is the celebrated Amruta Khanvilkar, who primarily works in Marathi and Hindi films. She has an extensive filmography to her name, and more than 3.6million social media followers.

The leading lady told the Advertiser:

“[The film] talks about how innocent people from rural India are lured into coming to London for films – and how this girl called Kalawati helps them. But the take is a comedy one.”

It is still unknown why the crew picked Maidenhead to shoot, or what the scene was for - though the Advertiser has made some enquiries.

Shooting is set to continue until today (March 23).
