ELECTION 135424-1

With the General Election now less than a month away, the Express spoke to confirmed candidates for the Windsor constituency for a brief overview of their background and key policies.

Conservatives - Jack Rankin

Conservative Windsor candidate Jack Rankin lives in Sunninghill with his wife and two sons.

He first came to the area after university, working at Centrica on Maidenhead Road in Windsor.

He was a Windsor and Maidenhead councillor for central Windsor, from 2015-2019.

“What I want to achieve is first and foremost to be a local, vocal, active and involved constituency Member of Parliament,” he said.

“I come from a working-class background, brought up with a keen understanding of the value of hard work and education to improve people's lives. I’m a blue collar, aspirational Conservative that wants to fight hard for the area.”

In terms of development, he is concerned about making sure that key infrastructure precedes new housing.

“In particular [there are concerns about] GP surgeries - we see that in West Windsor, Langley, in Sunningdale,” said Mr Rankin.

“They can't cope with new development demands.”

In Wraysbury, Datchet and Horton, flooding is 'of the utmost concern,' he said – and he will be fighting for the abandoned River Thames Scheme, he said.

Heathrow remains a concern, too.

“The third runway will be coming back in some way, shape or form and I'll be committed to voting against that when it does, regardless of the Conservative whip at the time,” said Mr Rankin.

Labour - Pavitar Kaur Mann

Labour’s candidate for Windsor MP is Slough Labour Group leader and Britwell councillor Pavitar Kaur Mann.

Ms Mann, 38, has served as a councillor in Slough for 14 years since she was elected at the age of 24.

A key focus for her was to get the ‘bread and butter’ of local politics right for Windsor residents - whom she said had been underrepresented by its outgoing MP.

She added this would mean hosting regular constituency surgeries and having a staffed and accessible office to allow residents to voice concerns.

Another priority Ms Mann highlighted, was the ongoing troubles with flooding and waterway pollution in and around Windsor.

She said she would campaign to fight back against the Tories’ ‘carte blanche attitude’ to sewage disposal which had ‘let water companies get away with it’.

Tackling crime and antisocial behaviour was another top issue for her, as was championing the role of young people in the community.

Ms Mann was one of the key figures is setting up the Slough Youth Parliament.

She is also Slough’s former Armed Forces Champion, and said Windsor had a ‘proud military history’ and that she wanted to see more support given to veterans and people in active service.

Liberal Democrats - Julian Tisi

Julian Tisi, a current Lib Dem councillor for Eton and Castle ward, has lived and worked in the area for more than 20 years.

He came to Windsor to work for Centrica in 2002 and is now an experienced chartered accountant.

Mr Tisi lives in the town with his wife, fellow RBWM councillor Amy Tisi, and their three children.

He is a governor at St Edward's Royal Free School, and a trustee of the Berkshire Music Trust and the Windsor Festival.

Mr Tisi has been a ‘a long-term local campaigner,’ involved in campaigns around Heatherwood Hospital, Windsor Fire Station, Alexandra Gardens, aircraft noise and the third runway at Heathrow.

He has stood for election as MP in Windsor several times. He feels the Lib Dem’s support has only grown since 2019 and that he can ‘feel the momentum growing’.

“The key priority that I and our party are leading on is the cost-of-living crisis, the NHS and social care, and the environment including sewage,” he said.

"I think all of those have a strong local angle. In the north of the constancy, we've had a lot of flooding.

“Part of the problem is the really poor oversight and funding from people like the Environment Agency, and not holding these water companies to account.”

Green Party - Michael Boyle

Green Party candidate Michael Boyle said he is ‘in it to win it’ as he looks to secure election campaigning on key environmental issues.

The 32-year-old Windsor resident hit out at performance of private water companies which has left the nation facing serious challenges with waste water and water supply.

He called for water companies such as Thames Water to be held financially responsible for historic failings and for water to be brought back under public ownership.

Michael left the Labour Party for the Green Party after becoming ‘disillusioned’ with the direction of travel of the opposition.

He told the Express while it looks likely Labour will form a national Government, the people of Windsor need a candidate who will hold the Government to account.

He described the country’s current First Past the Post voting system as ‘deeply unfair’ and called for a more proportional system which represents people of all political opinions.

Independent - David Buckley

David Buckley has been a councillor for Datchet, Horton and Wraysbury in the Royal Borough since being elected in 2023.

He has been a member of Datchet Parish Council for more than five years and is the Royal Borough’s Business Champion.

Mr Buckley, 60, said he was motivated to get involved in politics after finding himself ‘politically homeless’ in the 2019 General Election.

He is standing as an independent candidate for the upcoming election.

He said he would be an ‘honest and true’ voice for local people at a time when, he considered, the UK was facing some of its biggest challenges since the end of World War Two.

Mr Buckley, who now invests in technology businesses, said he has survived two strokes, having lived with a heart defect that wasn’t fixed until 2010.

Discussing his priorities if he were elected, Mr Buckley said he would advocate for more funding for councils as well as addressing a ‘deep concern’ over potential tax rises.

He said he would also campaign for better health care by improving residents’ access to GP surgeries and for planning regulation that ‘worked for local people’.

Mr Buckley added he wanted to ‘put more money back in the pocket of residents’ and ensure they had could live healthy lives.
