General Election 2017: Conservative Adam Afriyie re-elected in Windsor

Conservative candidate Adam Afriyie was re-elected as Windsor’s MP after securing 34,718 votes in yesterday's general election.

Mr Afriyie, who has been MP for the town since 2005, saw his majority reduced by 2,699 but still finished 22,384 votes ahead of Peter Shearman of Windsor Labour.

Shearman almost doubled his party’s votes from the 2015 general election as he finished on 12,334 with Julian Tisi of the Windsor Liberal Democrats on 5,434 and Fintan McKeown of the Green Party on 1,435.

Mr Afriyie said: “I’d really like to thank all of the very active, hard working helpers, volunteers and activists who worked with me on the streets of Windsor and elsewhere.

“The result has been very good for the Windsor constituency and for the electorate I give you the commitment to continue to fight for the things you care about locally.”

Mr Shearman, from Eton Wick, says he now wants to secure seats for Labour in the next Royal Borough elections.

He added: “I think there’s a number of wards where we can continue to build on what we’ve done and I think we can bring some red to the Royal Borough.”

In total, 48,619 votes were cast with turnout down from 70.38 per cent in 2015 to 66.1 per cent.
