Maidenhead United Women defeated by title-chasing Southampton Women at Holloways Park

Maidenhead United Women 0, Southampton Women FC 4

Maidenhead United Women fell to a 4-0 defeat against title-chasing Southampton Women FC at Holloways Park in Beaconsfield on Sunday.

The visitors are joint top scorers in the FAWNL Division 1 South West and they put in another accomplished performance to put the hard-working Magpies to the sword.

The final score was a little harsh on the Magpies, who were missed regular goalkeeper Ellie Parker through suspension.

Maidenhead were on the back-foot for much of this match, however the game’s first presentable chance fell to Annika Striepecke for the home side who shot just wide when well placed.

United fell behind in the 18th minute when EJ May took aim from around 25 yards and, after Erin Bloomfield made a run across stand-in keeper Phoebe Cole, the ball nestled in the back of the net.

Sarah Thompson, upfield from full-back, tested Kellie Warren in the Southampton goal but the visitors fully merited their lead heading into the break.

Early in the second period, the ever-willing Steph Nelson charged down a clearance from the visiting goalkeeper but the ball didn’t fall kindly for the Maidenhead striker before the excellent Megan Halfacree cleared a goal-bound shot from Jane Yeates.

Within minutes Laura Voakes extended the visitors’ lead with a firmly struck effort.

Cole made excellent saves to deny Holden and Wernham before Sophie Modak made a superb interception to stop Erin Bloomfield after the Southampton forward who rounded Cole.

A combination of captain Alex Dover and Ellie Vietz then snuffed out a Southampton attack and Thompson also made a goal-line clearance, but the away side wrapped it up with further strikes from Vokes and Samuels.

The schedule gets no easier for United who visit unbeaten league leaders Southampton FC at their AFC Totton home on Sunday December 15, 2pm kick-off.

Maidenhead: Cole; Thompson, Halfacree, Dover © (Sub Nazif 87’), Bloor, Modak, Vietz, Striepecke (Sub Saunders 82’), Nelson (Sub Carty-Duhaney 69’), Le Cumbre, O’Brien.  Subs not used: Mace, Langston-Llpoyd.
