The Ferry in Cookham, Aug 2025

The Ferry pub in Cookham will reopen tomorrow - Friday, September 26 - after a month-long closure for refurbishment.

The pub, run by Mitchells & Butlers, is set within a grade II-listed building and sits in Cookham on the banks of the Thames.

The company gives its pubs regular brush-ups, but this year’s work has been more wide-ranging than usual, aimed at making The Ferry a destination throughout the year rather than just the summer.

Announced last month, the upgrades are now complete.

One of the main changes is to 'the snug', the oldest part of the pub with wooden beams and a fireplace. It was previously used as a private function room, often booked only once a week.

The room has been reupholstered and fitted with new furniture, alongside a dartboard and a TV. It can still seat 25 guests for private dining but will now be available seven days a week.

The rest of the pub has also been remodelled. It now has four fireplaces across its different spaces, including the snug, entrance and bar areas.

The upstairs restaurant seats 80 diners and looks out over the river, while a smaller dining area downstairs has space for 30. There are two bar areas: a dog-friendly public bar and a saloon bar.

The kitchen, led by head chef Sev Baj who has worked at The Ferry for more than 10 years, has also introduced a new menu alongside the refurbishment. It includes pub classics such as fish and chips, seasonal dishes and plant-based options.

Sunday roasts remain a key part of the offer, with different cuts of meat and seasonal vegetables.

General manager Jason Kenny said: “We’re absolutely thrilled to welcome guests back to The Ferry and showcase our stunning transformation.

“Our location by the river makes us a truly special destination when it comes to offering a top hospitality experience.

“Now with our refreshed spaces – particularly our gorgeous snug area – we’re ready to provide an exceptional experience for everyone who visits.

“Whether you’re stopping by after exploring the delights of Cookham, taking a well-earned break from walking along the Thames Path, or simply want to enjoy our river views with excellent food and drink with friends or family, we have something for everyone.

The snug area is already proving popular for bookings, especially with Christmas party season approaching, Jason added.

“We can’t wait to welcome both familiar faces and new guests to experience what makes The Ferry such a special place,” he said.
