A private girls’ school in Ascot has announced an ‘exciting’ new chapter in its 125-year history – plans to welcome boys into its sixth form next year.
Heathfield School is an independent boarding and day school. It is part of the Mill Hill Education Group (MHEG) and is currently rated ‘Excellent’ across all areas by the Independent Schools Inspectorate.
The existing sixth form is relatively young – called Cadogan Sixth Form, the purpose-built centre opened just a few years ago in 2022.
It offers facilities such as ‘state-of-the-art’ classrooms and co-curricular spaces, supporting clubs and other such school activities.
Boys will be fully involved in all aspects of school life, including mixed sports, choirs, drama and musical productions, and leadership opportunities.
The new co-ed sixth form also includes the boarding option for boys too.
There will be ‘careful planning’ for areas such as boarding to maintain Heathfield’s ‘balanced, supportive environment,’ said the school’s headmaster, Jonathan Williams.
Heathfield’s move to a co-ed sixth form is intended to provide ‘a rich academic and social experience,’ he said.
Inclusion of both girls and boys brings collaboration across productions, clubs and student leadership – as well as ‘more diverse perspectives’, Mr Williams believes.
Meanwhile, the school’s smaller A-level classes and the broad choice of subjects will continue to ensure the personalised learning that current pupils are already used to.
Overall, the transition promises to continue the Heathfield ethos of ‘small school, big opportunities’ with a ‘more dynamic’ sixth form experience for everyone.
Mr Williams said: “We believe the time is right for Heathfield to welcome boys into the sixth form for the first time.
“We fully recognise that this is a significant step and are confident that this decision is absolutely in the best interests of our current and future students.
“We are excited at the positive impact this change will have on Heathfield in the years to come.
“Our students gain invaluable experience in a mixed environment, equipping them with the confidence, skills and resilience to thrive in future co-educational settings.”
Heathfield’s Sixth Form is going co-ed in September 2026.
To learn more about what will be on offer, interested people can come to one of several open days.
There is the sixth gorm open evening next Tuesday, September 30 from 6pm to 8pm; and a whole school open morning on Saturday, October 4 from 9.45am to12pm.
In addition, there are upcoming ‘Meat the Head’ slots which take place during the school day.
Places for each session are limited and include a tour and the opportunity to meet the Mr Williams, along with the admissions team for a Q&A.
