Andrew Lloyd Webber has written to the Royal Borough to express his objection to the planning application for Poundfield.
In a short statement submitted to the council objecting to the application from Oakford Homes, the musical impresario highlighted the land's importance to those who study and appreciate the work of Sir Stanley Spencer.
Poundfield features in Spencer's paintings.
In Lord Lloyd Webber's letter he said: "Any development on the Poundfield site could be judged very harshly by posterity. Poundfield was a major subject depicted in Stanley Spencer's landscape work.
"It is important that the landscape at Poundfield that he painted is able to be appreciated by future generations in the context of his work."
Berkeley Group is also expected to submit an application for housing across the Poundfield area.
