Agate: Frequently asked questions

What is Axate?

Axate is a company we are working with, that allows you to pay for online news.  Axate gives you more freedom over how you pay so you can read as much or as little as you like on our websites.

Regular Maidenhead Advertiser readers who visit our site daily can take out a subscription for just £2 a month. This allows unlimited access to Advertiser news and sport articles on our digital news site.

More casual readers can open up an Axate wallet and purchase a day pass for just 40p. A day pass allows you to read news and sport articles on the Advertiser for a period of 24 hours.  You can also use your Axate wallet to buy day passes to read the Slough Express and Windsor Express websites.

Why are you charging?

Simply put, good quality journalism costs money.

Changing reader habits have created challenges for many publishers. Online news allows us to reach a wider audience than we have before but digital advertising revenue alone is not enough to sustain local independent newspapers.

Collectively, hundreds of hours of work go in to every print edition we produce, most of which goes online. We ask you to pay a cover price for our newspapers and now we’re asking you to pay a small amount to read some of our best content on our websites.

We believe our journalism provides a valuable service to the community, but we can only continue providing that service if it is sustainable.

What happens with the money you make?

You can be safe in the knowledge that when you pay to read an article, you are doing more than just supporting local journalism.

The Maidenhead Advertiser and Slough and Windsor Express are owned by a charitable trust, which distributes 80 per cent of our profits back in to the community.

The money Baylis Media Ltd makes from premium articles won’t go into the pockets of shareholders but it will help support quality journalism and local charities and organisations.

Are you charging for all of your content?

No. Some of our stories, including police appeals, breaking news and shorter community stories remain openly accessible for everyone to view.

However, we are making more and more content available for Axate subscribers and account holders to read, including features, in-depth reports and weekly features such as Remember When and Viewpoint. Our aim is to give readers the best value for money possible by making a wide variety of news, sport and entertainment available through Axate.

How much do I pay?

If you read articles on the Advertiser website daily or several times a week, you will get the most value out of a monthly subscription. This costs just £2 a month and gives you access to all of the articles on the website – that’s less than 10p a day. You can subscribe in just a few clicks and can unsubscribe at any time.

If you are a more casual reader, a day pass will give you 24-hour access and allow you to read as many articles as you wish during that time.

As of October 7th 2021, the price of a day pass increased to 40p. This comes as we continue to make more of our content available through Axate, meaning readers can access a wider selection of local news content, as well as features, sport and opinion pieces. For less than the price of a chocolate bar, you can spend the day accessing all of these articles and, if you like what you see, you have the option to upgrade to a subscription.

How do I sign up?
