A chess champion from Maidenhead has returned from a prestigious world tournament victorious.

Matthew Wadsworth, of Courthouse Road, beat off competition at the World Youth Chess Championships held in Slovenia to finish fifth.

The 12-year-old said: "I had a great time in Slovenia and was really pleased with how I played."

A team of 34 English players took part in the competition in November with Matthew being crowned the most successful.

The former St Piran's School pupil was also crowned British Champion in the under 12 category in 2011 after fighting off competition at a tournament in Sheffield.
