"On your wedding day you should look like yourself at your most beautiful." Hear, hear Bobbi Brown.
Beauty Team Artist Hannah Martin was selected and trained by Bobbi herself.
Hannah represents the brand throughout the UK and Ireland, working with celebrities and mere mortals as well as creating looks for editorial, for London Fashion Week and for the Designer Wedding Show.
She will be hosting bridal master classes in our area throughout the year.
Lucy Holloway asked Hannah for some tips and tricks to help brides look their best on the big day.
Hello Hannah. Can we start with some suggestions on how to create Bobbi’s famed natural look both on the day and for the photos please?
Of course. There are a few basic rules when it comes to wedding makeup. Avoid foundation with a high sun protection factor as SPF can 'bounce back' in flash photography giving foundation a pale, sometimes chalky appearance.
Keep things relatively simple - good concealer and foundation, a hint of blush, well defined eyes and brows and a little colour on the lips. That way, your makeup won't date. We can all tell the seventies brides with their peach shadow and the eighties brides with the blue mascara!
Is blusher essential?
Yes, blush is must have on your wedding day. It’s easy to look washed out when wearing a pale colour and blush helps to make brides look fresh and healthy. Flash photography can also bleach colour on the face, so our advice is to add a little more blush than normal to make sure it can be seen.
When applying your blush, smile at yourself in the mirror so you can see exactly where the apples of your cheeks are, then sweep your blush over the high point of the apple of your cheek and blend it out towards your hairline. Make sure you use a blush brush. It may sound obvious, but I know many women who use their bronzer brush to apply their blush too and the brush head is so large they end up making the whole side of their face look flushed.
A great tip is to ask your photographer to take a shot of your face as you get ready and look at it on his monitor. When I do this, I almost always end up adding more blush. Don't worry about looking like Aunt Sally! Your Bobbi Brown artist will help you find the perfect blush to match your skin tone.
I’ve been using Bobbi’s award-winning Shimmer Brick powder in Bronze (£32) to add a bit of colour to my pasty February face. Is there a role for Shimmer Brick in wedding day make up?
Yes, you can accent your blush with a bit of Shimmer Brick to give your skin that pretty bridal luminosity. I love using the Rose and Pink Quartz Shimmer Bricks on brides over the top of blush as it helps to achieve that glowing, radiant look.
What happens if I get a spot the day before?
Don't panic! A spot can be easily concealed. The worst thing you can do is pick it as you will further irritate it and if you break the skin it will make it much harder to conceal.
How can a bride make the most of her eyes? Any tips for making small eyes look big, doey and romantic? And how about a mascara that will last the day and make it through a few tears?
It’s important that your eyes are well defined on your wedding day and this can easily be done with some eyeliner. You can use the Black Ink Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner (£17.50) to create a slim, elegant line tight to the base of your lashes or you can create a thicker line that you can then smudge slightly for a softer, more romantic look.
To make your eyes look as big and bright as possible, curl your lashes and marry your eye liner with a good helping of Bobbi Brown’s No Smudge or Intensifying Long-Wear mascara (both £19). A good mascara can make all the difference to your eye makeup look. Take your time when applying mascara - push the wand right into the base of the lashes then slowly pull it through to the very tip. Repeat this as many times as you need to create the desired effect.
The Bobbi Brown range all started with lipsticks. How can I dress up my lips to make sure the colour doesn’t vanish with the first kiss/glass of champagne?
To ensure that your lipstick lasts, line your lips with lip liner before you apply your lip colour and then fill the entire lip with the liner. This will stain your lips, so that even if some of your lipstick wears off, you still have the colour stained underneath. That being said, I still think you should have lipstick to hand on the day for touch ups, along with some lip balm so your lips look hydrated and clean at all times.
And use a bright lip colour of prink, rose or plum. Pale colours tend to look washed out in photos. I wore Pink Lip Colour No. 6 at my own wedding and there are two great new pinks in the Uber Pink collection that we’ve just launched: Pink Kiss and Neon Pink (both priced at £19).
How far in advance should I start thinking about my wedding make-up?
I’d suggest that you start learning how to do your bridal makeup at least a few months before the wedding so you have time to try different looks and master new techniques. Once you’ve found the look for you, practice it until you feel confident that you know exactly what you'll be doing on the morning of the wedding.
Allow time to visit the studio in Windsor at least twice for complimentary bridal make up lessons. On your first visit we’ll find the right base makeup to match your skin and master how to apply that. On your second visit, we’ll recap on the base and look into colour. You are welcome to visit a third time to practice the full application with an artist on hand to guide you.
