Motorists can expect delays for up to eight weeks as temporary traffic lights have been installed along Ascot Road.
Work began on Tuesday to provide gas supplies to Holyport College.
Two-way traffic lights have been put in place and the road will remain open in both directions when work is suspended at weekends.
The college is paying the £150,000 for the project.
The road, off the busy Braywick roundabout, saw regular queues over the winter as South East Water installed a water main.
