INTERVIEW: Comedian Rob Beckett

In just five-years Rob Beckett has risen from an unknown office worker to an award winning comic and television regular.

Rob began his career whilst working 9-5 for a company which books conference rooms.

He decided to give stand-up a crack during a May 2009 visit to Up the Creek comedy club in Greenwich.

"I watched the opening spot, he was awful. I thought there's no way I can be as bad as him, and even if I am he didn't get booed off," said the 28-year-old,

"I gave it a go and I was as bad as him."

Not put off by his first experience, the bubbly South Londoner kept going back.

He added: "I originally did it for something to do, then I got addicted. I did four or five gigs a week. To get better you've got to keep doing it. I improved by working."

At first Rob combined gigging nearly every night with his full time job. This lead to two years where Rob 'can't remember any of the TV, music or films' as he balanced his day job, and honing his comedy skills in clubs during the evening.

It also involved 'degrading moments', like catching up his sleep in one of Reading Station's disabled toilets.

Rob describes his stand up show as 'nothing groundbreaking', instead his aim is to just 'chat and be funny'.

In just five years he has enjoyed a meteoric rise with a well received comedy tours and regular panel show appearances.

He won the Amused Moose Laugh Off Award at the 2010 Edinburgh Fringe, and was nominated for Best Newcomer at the 2010 Adelaide Festival.

"It's quite quick but I'm not complaining to be fair. I've done as many gigs as someone doing eight to 10 years," added Rob.

He says that growing up the middle of five brothers in Lewisham prepared him well for sharing platforms with other comedians.

"We do not really go out that much to Madame Tussauds or anything. We had a lot of family dinners. Chatting, eating. That's why I quite like it, doing panel shows. It remind me of home. I like a bit of shouting!"

Robert Beckett – Live is at Norden Farm on Sunday, March 2. Tickets cost £12.
