Doctors are urging the elderly to get help the moment they feel ill.
NHS England’s ‘The Earlier, The Better’ campaign began yesterday and runs for eight weeks.
It encourages people to seek help from doctors, pharmacists and the NHS Choices website as soon as they feel ill.
It is hoped this will reverse the rising number of older people admitted to hospital.
Geoff Payne, medical director for Thames Valley, said: “Colder weather will make more people feel poorly, but it’s important that people in high risk groups get help early to nip health problems in the bud.”
